West Texas Intermediate crude for May delivery lost 29 cents to $82.85 on the New York Merc, while Brent for June lost 29 cents to $87.00 (all figures in this para U.S.). Western Canadian Select traded at a discount of $13.80 to WTI, up from a discount of $14.20. Natural gas for May added four cents to $1.79. The TSX energy index added 1.14 points to close at 296.33.

One of today's busiest (and happiest) traders was Robert Bose's Sintana Energy Inc. (SEI), which shot up 24 cents to 82 cents on 13.2 million shares, courtesy of pleasing test results from Namibia's Orange basin. The Mopane-1X exploration well on the offshore PEL 83 licence (in which Sintana owns an indirect 4.9-per-cent interest) has tested at a rate-restricted maximum of 14,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day. The operator and 80-per-cent owner of the licence, Portugal's Galp Energia, marvelled that the Mopane complex alone could hold over 10 billion barrels, which would make it one of the world's largest discoveries.
