New York spot gold dipped $5.10 by Friday afternoon, pausing at $4,164.10. The TSX Venture Exchange dipped 1.08 points to 845.30 while the TSX gold index added 5.94 points to 883.20. Most precious metals miners gained ground today. One doing so with enthusiasm was Jaguar Mining Inc. (JAG), which rose 22 cents to $6.63 on 358,000 shares. B2Gold Corp. (BTO) also did well, adding 16 cents to $7.49 on 8.23 million shares. Capstone Copper Corp. (CS), on the other hand, dropped 41 cents to $12.25 on 7.6 million shares.

Juan Gavidia's Orvana Minerals Corp. (ORV) did well. It added six cents to $2.14 on 415,000 shares on word it produced just over 45,000 gold equivalent ounces during its latest fiscal year, aided by a strong fourth quarter. That topped its forecast by a modest amount. Mr. Gavidia, chief executive officer, cheered that the company's Spanish operations exceeded guidance with the support of its "strategic use of additional contractor services," which helped offset labour shortages and absenteeism. (There is nothing worse than not finding workers -- and when you do find them, they go missing.)
