New York spot gold fell $53.40 by Wednesday afternoon, pausing at $4,109.40. The TSX Venture Exchange slid 12.95 points to 877.17 while the TSX gold index fell 26.53 points to 863.91. Precious metals miners took a hit today, with Silver X Mining Corp. (AGX), down 4.5 cents to 86 cents on 1.06 million shares, and GoGold Resources Inc. (GGD), down 24 cents to $3.78 on 3.09 million shares, helping to lead the way.

Roger Rosmus's Goliath Resources Ltd. (GOT) was back in the news today with new assays from drilling at its Surebet high-grade gold system, on the Golddigger project in northwestern British Columbia. The headline hit yielded 7.9 grams of gold and 138.6 grams of silver per tonne, plus 0.34 per cent copper, 1.16 per cent zinc and 0.22 per cent lead -- 9.89 grams of gold equivalent per tonne -- over a 12-metre interval.

Another Surebet hole had a comparable grade, 9.74 grams of gold equivalent per tonne, but over just 6.23 metres. Four other new holes at Surebet also returned gold, just not the high-grade kind. Goliath also highlighted a 24.97-metre strike in the Big Bulk zone that graded 0.7 gram of gold equivalent per tonne, and some intercepts in the Eldorado and Bonanza zones warranted a second helping of bold black ink.
