Ouch: New York spot tumbled $170.90 Monday, pausing for air at $4,113.60. The TSX Venture Exchange -- you had to expect this -- was down 26.77 points to 894.24, while the TSX gold index slid 48.32 points to 887.99. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) dropped $14.06 to $261.04 on 2.67 million shares, and Silver X Mining Corp. (AGX) lost five cents to 94 cents on 1.72 million shares.
It was not a good day to roll out gold news, but Hudbay Minerals Inc. (HBM) added 48 cents to $38.13 on 3.38 million shares. A new plan for Hudbay's Snow Lake mine in Manitoba unlocks 60 per cent more gold production over its life, sufficient to maintain average production of about 185,000 ounces per year for the next five years. The improvements, enthuses Peter Kukielski, chief executive officer, are "demonstrating the incredible value that we have created through successful exploration and continuous improvement initiatives."
