New York spot gold lost $36.30 Monday, taking a break at $4,340.70. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 3.04 points to 920.03, while the TSX gold index dropped 9.24 points to 945.24. Most precious metals miners lost ground today, a few taking bigger leaps backward. One of those, China Gold International Resources Corp. (CGG), slid $4.48 to $43.19 on 507,000 shares. Allied Gold Corp. (AAUC) dropped 90 cents to $31.40 on 981,000 shares, and Iamgold Corp. (IMG) fell 97 cents to $28.28 on 4.06 million shares. Endeavour Mining PLC (EDV), on the other hand, added six cents to $87.12 on 585,000 shares.
None of those had news today. One -- well two -- that did have something to say came touting a friendly merger. Dale Andres's Artemis Gold Inc. (ARTG) fell $1.50 to $39.50 on 1.11 million shares on word it is acquiring all the shares of Frederick Earnest's Vista Gold Corp. (VGZ). Vista jumped 66 cents to $3.86 on 1.24 million shares on word that its shareholders will get 0.0966 of an Artemis share for each of theirs, a premium of nearly 30 per cent.
