New York spot gold fell $50 Wednesday, pausing at $4,263. The TSX Venture Exchange dipped 4.88 points to 896.10, while the TSX gold index lost 10.13 points to 925.77. Most precious metals miners moved lower, but most did so cautiously. Oh, Orezone Gold Corp. (ORE) did gain eight cents to $2.91 on 5.634 million shares, and Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) added 78 cents to $56.73 on 1.65 million shares, but the strong silent types were few today. McEwen Inc. (MUX) was among those southbound, losing 40 cents to $25.45 on 198,000 shares.

Eric Sprott's New Found Gold Corp. (NFGC) had a good day -- one of just a few since it graduated to the TSX from the TSX-V late last month -- adding 17 cents to $2.42 on 1.24 million shares. (This was just its second million-share day on the TSX -- those days came as often as not back on the junior board.) Today's upward jaunt was sparked by word that New Found Gold has declared its Hammerdown mine in central Newfoundland to be in commercial production.
