New York spot gold jumped $83.90 Thursday, ending the session at $4,471.10. The TSX Venture Exchange also did well, adding 9.5 points to 972, while the TSX gold index jumped 35.53 points, ending the day at 992.09. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) was buoyant, leaping $13.71 to $285.82 on 1.96 million shares, and so was Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (WDO), which rose $2.56 to $34.59 on 908,000 shares. Not so strong was Altius Minerals Corp. (ALS), which dipped 13 cents to $63.84 on 203,000 shares.
Darren Blasutti's Mining Americas Inc. (MAI) jumped 83 cents to $6.48 on 1.73 million shares on word that the Mexican government has approved the key permits needed to develop the company's Cerro de Oro open-pit, heap-leach gold mine in Zacatecas. With the approval of a land use change and the environmental impact assessment now complete, Mining Americas -- note the untrimmed hedges -- "will start planning the advancement of Cerro de Oro toward a construction decision."
