Woah! New York spot gold soared Wednesday, leaping $187.20 to $4,520.10 by the pause. The TSX Venture Exchange also was strong, adding 26.91 points to 971.78, while the TSX gold index surged 74.78 points to end the day at 956.84. Where to start: Endeavour Silver Corp. (EDR) leapt $1.73 to $15.15 on 2.09 million shares and Novagold Resources Inc. (NG) kept it company, adding $1.36 to $11.67 on 1.41 million shares. Even the diversified behemoths moved smartly today: Franco-Nevada Corp. (FNV) jumped $23.25 to $346.87 on 601,000 shares.
There were some losers, but they were as rare as gold mines, and it took news to drive them downward. Elaine Ellingham's Omai Gold Mines Corp. (OMG) slipped 13 cents to an intraday low of $2.85 on a preliminary economic assessment of its Omai project in Guyana. The anticipated dream sheet was based on 38.1 million tonnes indicated at 2.04 grams of gold per tonne and 106.6 million tonnes inferred at 1.59 grams per tonne, nearly eight million ounces of gold spread across the open-pittable Wenot deposit and the smaller underground Gilt Creek deposit.
