New York spot gold had an off day Thursday, dropping $57.30 to $4,350.30. The TSX Venture Exchange moved lower as well, losing 9.44 points to 966.43, while the TSX gold index ended the day down 22.43 points to 874.16. Most precious metals miners listed in Canada lost ground today. Starcore International Mines Ltd. (SAM) fell five cents to 53 cents on 595,000 shares in silence today, down from an intraday high of 62 cents on Tuesday. Mind you, a share cost just 40 cents two weeks ago. Equally quiet Orosur Mining Inc. (OMI), on the other hand, added 3.5 cents to 30.5 cents on 4.97 million shares.

Shane Williams's West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG) fell one cent to 77 cents on 2.96 million shares on word that phase I refurbishment of the Madsen mine shaft is complete, with an initial capacity of 200 tonnes per day. Two additional phases are planned, with the second boosting the hoisting rate to 700 tonnes per day and the third to 2,000 tonnes per day -- both reaching progressively deeper levels of the mine.
