New York spot gold rose early, but ended Tuesday down $21.40 to $4,366.80. Nevertheless, bullion has clearly flown the $4,000-an-ounce coop where it had been nestling for the past several weeks. The TSX Venture Exchange gained altitude at the open, but then capsized, falling 7.23 points to 966.58, while the TSX gold index ended the session down 1.36 points to 888.7. Endeavour Mining PLC (EDV) did well, adding 95 cents to $78.59 on 382,000 shares, and Lundin Gold Inc. (LUG) managed a 89-cent gain, ending the day at $92.49 on 977,000 shares. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (WDO), on the other hand, fell seven cents to $33.80 on 1.09 million shares.

Patrick Downey's Orezone Gold Corp. (ORE) lost five cents to $2.66 on 4.83 million shares on new assays from its Bombore project in central Burkina Faso. The company cheered more than a dozen results as highlights, but this batch of assays came from 118 new holes. And so, investors wowed by grade could fixate on the one-metre interval grading 223.25 grams of gold per tonne, while those more enthused by widths were offered a 34-metre stretch that graded just under three grams per tonne. A third hole tried to please both sects of gold bugs, with 8.34 grams per tonne across a six-metre stretch.
