New York spot gold added $3.70 to $4,051.70 Friday, as bullion clings to its $4,000-an-ounce perch. The TSX Venture Exchange dropped 5.47 points to 868.63, while the TSX gold index added 2.17 points to 748.70. Most precious metals miners stayed close to home on another quiet summer Friday. DPM Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) did add $1.53 to $52.45 on 3.18 million shares, while West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG) fell five cents to 68 cents on 2.51 million shares.
Geoff Hampson's Soma Gold Corp. (SOMA) rose four cents to 72 cents on 131,000 shares on word of "progress across three mining assets." The company touts an approval by the Colombian government to triple its production rate at the Aurora mine to -- hold on to your hats -- 75 tonnes of ore per day, effective immediately. Soma says that it expects to boost production to between 30 and 40 tonnes per day at 4.5 grams of gold per tonne "in the coming weeks."
