New York spot gold leapt $91.80 to $4,121.90 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange moved higher as well, adding 17.48 points to 914.38 while the TSX gold index gained 27.69 points to 791.42. Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) did well, jumping $3.58 to $47.72 on 2.68 million shares unaided by news, while equally silent B2Gold Corp. (BTO) leapt 45 cents to $5.77 on 14.15 million shares. Another miner among the horde of strong, silent types was Novagold Resources Inc. (NG), which rose 65 cents to $9.13 on 992,000 shares. OR Royalties Inc. (OR), on the other hand, fell 45 cents to $44.46 on 1.09 million shares.
Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM), one presumes, would have been in line for a solid gain today, but it fell $2.26 to $218.10 on 2.08 million shares as a result of bad news -- a "rock mass movement" yesterday along the north wall of the Barnat open pit at its Canadian Malartic operation in Quebec. As a result of the movement, which occurred without injury or damage, the company temporarily suspended operations as a precautionary measure.
