New York spot gold -- whoa, there it is, off to the races again -- leapt above $4,720 early Wednesday, pausing for air up $133.40 to $4,690. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 17.13 points to 995.90 while the TSX gold index added 62.03 points to 892. It was nearly impossible to find a precious metal miner that did not gain ground today. Among those with big gains were Iamgold Corp., which jumped $3.07 to $25.23 on 5.15 million shares, and Americas Gold and Silver Corp. (USA), which added $1.32 to $8.87 on 4.93 million shares.

There was one, of course: Goldquest Mining Corp. (GQC), down 33 cents late yesterday, plummeted 88 cents to 73 cents on 9.41 million shares today, dipping to 43 cents at one point. The slide followed word that work at its Romero project in the Dominican Republic is halted, as the government, having "listened with attention, respect and responsibility" to protesters, deciding to suspend all work at the site. "We respect the position outlined by the [government]," said Luis Santana, Goldquest's chief executive officer, adding that he "views this as part of the necessary dialogue that accompanies responsible project development." One can hope.
