New York spot gold added $17.10 to $4,708.90 on Friday, a docile end to a flattish week. The TSX Venture Exchange has been a bit more rambunctious than bullion of late, but today it fell 9.23 points to 1,011 while the TSX gold index added 18.72 points to 918.22. Serabi Gold PLC (SBI) jumped 16 cents to $5.89 on 16,000 shares today, while Majestic Gold Corp. (MJS) was unchanged at 13.5 cents on 3.29 million shares.

Today is the latest instalment of slow-news Friday, also known as one of the best times to reveal bad news to a distracted market. Unfortunately, there was plenty of that today -- bad news, that is. Shane Williams's West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG) said late yesterday that it produced 20,000 ounces of gold at its Madsen mine in 2025, as it "transitioned from restart activities to an operating mine."

Looking ahead, the company projects that it will produce between 35,000 and 45,000 ounces this year at an all-in sustaining cost of between $2,800 (U.S.) and $3,600 (U.S.) per ounce. As a result, West Red Lake tumbled 18 cents to 84 cents on 28.78 million shares today, hitting an intraday low of just 79 cents in the morning. In early March, you may recall -- and if you were one of the buyers, you most certainly do -- West Red Lake traded as high as $1.48.
