New York spot gold added $47.40 to $4,766.30 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 12.81 points to 995.39 while the TSX gold index added 0.54 point to 963.01. Many Canadian gold miners gained altitude again today. SSR Mining Inc. (SSRM) started well, but ended the day down $2.32 to $46.16 on 2.27 million shares while Oceanagold Corp. (OGC) held its gain adding 70 cents to $46.66 on 1.12 million shares. Soma Gold Corp. (SOMA), on the other hand, was weak but recovered somewhat, ending the day off two cents to $1.79 on 204,000 shares.
Louis-Pierre Gignac's G Mining Ventures Corp. (GMIN) lost 71 cents to $50.40 on 5.48 million shares on word it has arranged a "uniquely synergistic acquisition" of G2 Goldfields Inc. (GTWO), offering 0.212 of a share for each G2 share. Unsurprisingly, the 72-per-cent premium sent G2's stock up $4.75 to $10.78 on 29.9 million shares on the news.
