New York spot gold flirted with the $5,000 mark today -- not so long ago that would have been jaw-droppingly good -- eventually pausing for air down $12.50 at $5,005.20. Bullion began its ballistic surge from the $2,000 mark just two years ago, but by late January it had been as high as $5,602. The TSX Venture Exchange dipped 5.94 points to 1,012.17 while the TSX gold index rose 7.07 points to 920. Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) was strong, as it added 80 cents to $24.99 on 2.51 million shares, but Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. (WPM) was not, as it lost $1.51 to $190.62 on 1.23 million shares.

Andrew Chubb's Awale Resources Ltd. (ARIC) fell three cents to 82 cents on 351,000 shares on word it has drilled a 42-metre interval grading 1.9 grams of gold per tonne and 0.57 per cent copper, at depth in the BBM target on its Odienne project in Ivory Coast. The zone had a richer core, with 3.7 grams of gold per tonne and 0.85 per cent copper noted across a 10-metre run. A second of the four new holes also did well, with a 15-metre subinterval yielding 2.7 grams of gold per tonne and 0.9 per cent copper within a 31-metre zone that averaged 1.7 grams of gold per tonne and 0.57 per cent copper.
