New York spot gold rose $124.40 Monday, pausing for air at $5,230.30. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 8.46 points to 1,051.02 while the TSX gold index added 37.61 points to 1,052.50. Equinox Gold Corp. (EQX) was strong, adding $1.44 to $24.48 on 6.15 million shares, and so was Fortuna Mining Corp. (FVI), which added $1.51 to $18.28 on 2.97 million shares. Not so strong was Avino Silver & Gold Mines Ltd. (ASM), which dipped 37 cents to $12.06 on 2.67 million shares.

There were other movers today, but they were prodded by news. Kelvin Dushnisky and Clive Johnson's B2Gold Corp. (BTO) says that Mr. Johnson, the company's founder, president and chief executive officer, will be retiring at the company's June annual meeting. Mike Cinnamond, currently chief operating officer and vice-president of finance, will take his place. Mr. Johnson offered the usual puffery ahead of his departure, as did Mr. Cinnamond in anticipation of his move into the corner office -- and Mr. Dushnisky, chairman, did his best to out-puff them both. The huffing inflated the market, as B2Gold added 48 cents to $7.85 on 17.19 million shares today.
