Well, that was not much of a barrier as things turned out, was it? New York spot gold blew past the $5,000 mark like a category 5 hurricane rumbling across a low-lying Caribbean island, leaping to a high of $5,110 before ending the session up $26.20 at $5,009.30. The TSX Venture Exchange, up strong early, fell 13.83 points to 1,140.32, while the TSX gold index added 7.99 points to 1,022.57. (Get a move on, TSX-V! When it reached 3,372 in 2007, the gold index was at just 300 points. A decade ago, the gold index bottomed at 114 points and the TSX-V slumped to 466 points, but the main TSX index logged barely a downward blip.)
Taseko Mines Ltd. (TKO) added 29 cents to $10.74 on 5.16 million shares and Starcore International Mines Ltd. (SAM) added five cents to $1.33 on 927,000 shares. Fortuna Mining Corp. (FVI) started strong, getting to $17.15, but it ended the day down 24 cents to $15.73 on 4.65 million shares.
