New York spot gold lost $17.10 Thursday, ending the day at $3,368.60. The TSX Venture Exchange dropped 1.55 points to 802.93 while the TSX gold index retreated 3.58 points to 511.62. Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TXG) helped drive the retreat, as it fell 73 cents to $42.69 on 271,000 shares. GoGold Resources Inc. (GGD) tagged along but recovered late in the day, gaining one cent to $2.26 on 1.37 million shares. Jaguar Mining Inc. (JAG) was up early but down late, dropping two cents to $4.12 on 274,000 shares.
First some bad news: Jason Simpson's Orla Mining Ltd. (OLA) said today that an "uncontrolled material movement event" -- a rock slide -- occurred along the temporary north wall of the open pit at its Camino Rojo oxide gold mine in Zacatecas, Mexico. The slide triggered a controlled stock price movement event in the market, as Orla slumped $2.30 to $13.72 on 4.67 million shares on news that the company has suspended mining at Camino Rojo, although processing of stockpiled material continues. The impact of the slide, which was triggered by heavy rainfall, is not yet known.
