New York spot gold gained $30.70 Friday, closing at $3,353.40. The TSX Venture Exchange added 10.98 points to 784.42 while the TSX gold index rose 6.61 points to 503.84. Most gold miners gained altitude today, thanks to bullion, but none like not-yet-a-miner Snowline Gold Corp. (SGD). Snowline roared to a high of $10.52 before tripping a regulatory circuit breaker, and it kept much of its gain after the obligatory five-minute time-out, ending the day up 93 cents to $8.96 on 1.93 million shares.
Not everyone had out the hats and horns -- miners with a hefty copper component took a kicking from President Trump's latest (and one presumes unintended) attempt to spike the American economy. The threat of a 50-per-cent tariff on copper had Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (IVN) down 31 cents to $10.67 on 7.18 million shares and Hudbay Minerals Inc. (HBM) off 39 cents to $14.34 on 3.35 million shares.
