New York spot gold fell $4.70 to $2,030.60 on Monday. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 2.09 points to 550.23 while the TSX gold index fell 4.36 points to 242.35. Most Canadian gold miners moved lower today, although Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) managed an eight-cent rise to $6.96 on 1.12 million shares. Most declines were modest -- well save one that is, but more about that in a bit. Newmont Corp. (NGT) continued its downward drift today, slipping $1.71 to $40.50 on 931,000 shares, and so did Victoria Gold Corp. (VGCX), which fell 29 cents to $5.35 on 301,000 shares.

Now about that bad news: Richard Young's Argonaut Gold Corp. (AR) slid 12.5 cents to 23.5 cents on 42.4 million shares following the company's 2024 outlook for key operating and financial statistics -- a bit of accounting prose that, for Argonaut, has usually translated into a "brace for impact" warning. Mr. Young, president and chief executive officer, says that the company's near-term focus remains on the continuing ramp-up of production at the Magino mine, the source of most of Argonaut's woes over the past several years.
