New York spot gold rose $2.40 to $2,043.60 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange added 1.49 points to 551.56 while the TSX gold index slipped 0.24 point to 276.09. Most Canadian-listed gold miners moved little from their Wednesday close. Kinross Gold Corp. (K) did add six cents to $7.70 on 3.45 million shares and Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) did gain six cents to $23.20 on 2.92 million shares.

Barrick is reportedly mulling a takeover bid for beleaguered First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (FM), a $30 stock last fall before the Panamanian government forced the company to suspend production at its Cobre Panama gold and copper mine -- and has moved to close it for good. First Quantum had said the mine would produce about 150,000 ounces of gold and 370,000 tonnes of copper in 2023, and so its contribution will be missed. First Quantum slipped 24 cents to $13.05 on 7.56 million shares today.

Colin Kettell and Denis Laviolette's New Found Gold Corp. (NFG) jumped 23 cents to $4.72 on 240,000 shares today on word it has surpassed its multiyear goal of 500,000 metres of drilling thanks to a 196,000-metre effort the company managed with up to 14 rigs working last year. With the lofty goal now attained, the company will move on to -- you guessed it -- more drilling.
