New York spot gold fell 30 cents to $1,860.60 on Tuesday -- higher than the $1,820 it sat at late last week but below Monday's high of $1,865, as the latest Middle Eastern war continues to make news. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.55 point to 534.09 while the TSX gold index added 6.31 points to 260.64. Most Canadian gold miners moved higher today, although Artemis Gold Inc. (ARTG) lagged with a five-cent drop to $5.30 on 356,000 shares. McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX) was strong, adding 38 cents to $8.96 on 18,000 shares, and so was Kinross Gold Corp. (K), which added 27 cents to $6.54 on 2.88 million shares.

Stephen Mullowney's TRX Gold Corp. (TNX) lost four cents to 53 cents on 42,000 shares on word that its founder and chairman, James Sinclair, died late last week, aged 82. Mr. Mullowney, chief executive officer, said Mr. Sinclair's passing was a "great loss and a moment of sadness" for his company, lauding the Connecticut-based Mr. Sinclair as a "tenacious, hard-driving individual who challenged everyone around him to move forward and be better."
