New York spot gold fell $1.30 to $1,887.70 on Friday. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 0.39 points to 586.11 while the TSX gold index dropped 0.77 point to 260.11. Canadian gold miners moved lower today, although one exception was McEwen Mining Inc. (MUX), which added 22 cents to $9.34 on 26,000 shares. Karora Resources Inc. (KRR) helped lead the retreat. It fell eight cents to $4.17 on 541,000 shares. Victoria Gold Corp. (VGCX) kept it company, dropping 18 cents to $6.60 on 316,000 shares.

Some days inaction can be good news. Keyvan Salehi's Nighthawk Gold Corp. (NHK) lost one-half cent to 36 cents on 25,000 shares on word that its camp at the Colomac gold project has been closed since mid-July -- an early end to the 2023 exploration season. This is good because of the wildfires ravaging much of the Northwest Territories -- fires that have forced the evacuation of most of the larger communities around Great Slave Lake, including Yellowknife.
