New York spot gold fell $7.50 to $1,969 on Thursday. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 4.51 points to 617.63 while the TSX gold index fell 8.16 points to 287.31. West Red Lake Gold Mines Ltd. (WRLG) was one of a few Canadian gold miners moving upward today. It added one cent to 73 cents on 134,000 shares without benefit of news. News was the driver behind a $3.70 drop logged by Newmont Corp. (NGT), which closed at $55.91 on 699,000 shares. Newmont said early this morning that it earned $155-million (U.S.) in its second quarter and had declared a quarterly dividend of 40 (U.S.) cents, unchanged from the first quarter.

Paul Matysek and Collin Kettell's Nevada King Gold Corp. (NKG) closed unchanged at 43 cents on 359,000 shares on word it has drilled a 100.6-metre interval averaging 3.39 grams of gold and 9.6 grams of silver per tonne at Atlanta, in southeastern Nevada. A few other holes revealed today held encouragement, with one yielding 2.67 grams of gold and 13.6 grams of silver per tonne over 73.2 metres. Previous hits in the area produced several long intervals averaging about one gram of gold per tonne, with one managing four grams of gold and 21 grams of silver per tonne over nearly 30 metres.
