The critical and specialty minerals stocks box score on Monday was a positive 94-70-146 as the TSX Venture Exchange added 19 points to 974. Alphamin Resources Corp. (AFM) leapt 10 cents to $1.66 on 9.46 million shares. The company, which has been mining a high-grade tin deposit for several years at Bisie, continues to do well on the quiet -- silence being golden in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Tom Drivas's Appia Rare Earths & Uranium Corp. (API), unchanged at 16.5 cents on 96,000 shares, has wrapped up its summer drill program at its Alces Lake rare earth elements property in Northern Saskatchewan. The six-hole, 1,440-metre effort hit rare-earth-elements-bearing monazite in three of the holes, and the material also showed up in several surface outcrop samples collected from high-priority areas.

Assays are pending, but for hooked investors looking for an immediate fix of optimism, Appia was a willing pusher of geological jargon. The pegmatite-hosted -- not to mention associated amphibolite-hosted -- rare-earth-bearing monazite was visually identified across four metres in one hole, seven near-surface metres in a second, and 12 metres at depth in a third hole of the program. All the observed monazite displayed anomalous radioactivity, the company added, consistent with the naturally radioactive character previously noted at Alces Lake.
