The critical and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was a positive 108-57-145 as the TSX Venture Exchange leapt 28 points to 955. Scandium Canada Ltd. (SCD) was strong today, as it added 2.5 cents to 19.5 cents on 6.34 million shares. The surge comes at a good time: The company is offering 25 million charity flow-through shares at 20 cents apiece to advance its Crater Lake project in Quebec.

Jonathan Evans's Lithium Americas Corp. (LAC) rose 26 cents to $4.49 on 1.57 million shares. The company is selling $175-million (U.S.) of subordinated convertible debentures, looking to "further strengthen the company's liquidity position as it continues its development of Thacker Pass." Nevada-based Thacker Pass, the company says, is designed to produce 40,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium carbonate annually.

The financing, Lithium Americas says, complements a $2.23-billion (U.S.) United States Department of Energy (DOE) loan, as well as strategic investments from General Motors Holdings LLC and funds managed by Orion Resource Partners. In other words, it is a little something extra for the just-in-case jar. Lithium Americas has agreed to issue $150-million (U.S.) of the debentures soon, with the other $25-million (U.S.) to perhaps follow in one or more subsequent closings, at its discretion.
