The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was a hopeful 93-66-151 as the TSX Venture Exchange rose 10 points to 784. Ask any rock climber: It is always easier to descend a hill than to climb one -- one just has to let go and let gravity kick in. Paul Zimnisky's global rough diamond price index felt the tug of physics this week, as it lost 0.9 point to sit at 126.6 points, down 0.7 per cent on the week and off 0.6 per cent over the past month.

The good news is that the drop is just another weekly squiggle on the last five months of the chart, although one that does draw the battle closer to the latest horizontal dashed line of defence that Mr. Zimnisky threw up along the 126-point mark several months ago to denote the latest period with flattish prices. His several other metaphorical attempts to cajole panicking rough diamond buyers into holding the line failed miserably over the past three years -- but this one is still holding. Of course, what diamond miners need is a major offensive that will wipe out the 80-point bulge that carried prices nearly 40 per cent below their record highs of early 2022, when Mr. Zimnisky's index reached a lofty 207.3 points.
