The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was a mediocre 70-85-155 as the TSX Venture Exchange rose 10 points to 656. Perhaps we have seen the bottom in rough diamond prices after three years of relentless declines, as Paul Zimnisky's global rough diamond price index continues its flattish stretch. The index added 0.1 point this week, although it is 0.2 point lower than where we thought it was a week ago thanks to a lowering triggered by tardy data. (Mr. Zimnisky is methodical in keeping his chart accurate, and details from rough diamond sales can be difficult to obtain.)

At this point, the index sits 3.3 points above the five-year low of 124.3 points reached in mid-February. The index has been lower, of course: Mr. Zimnisky pegged its value at 100 points when he launched the current version late in 2007, and it was around 120 points during the depth of the COVID collapse -- although best of luck, Mr. Miner, if you had rough diamonds to sell at that time.
