The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score on Friday was a positive 85-80-145 although the TSX Venture Exchange fell fractionally to 551. Paul Zimnisky and his global rough diamond price index continue to exude some sparkle as rough diamond prices delivered another upward jog this week. Mr. Zimnisky's new fix is set at 155.6 points, up from 155.0 a week ago. Mind you, a week ago he had the index at 155.2 points, so some late-to-arrive data were not as buoyant as the more punctual information available at the time. (The index is regularly readjusted for tardy data, occasionally back a month or two.)

Mr. Zimnisky says that rough prices are up 1.7 per cent over the past month and are 2.2 per cent higher than mid-October, when the index bottomed at 152.2 points. The turnaround coincided with the voluntary moratorium on purchase of rough diamonds by Indian jewellers, but that two-month period ended two weeks ago, and prices have continued to track higher.
