U.S. federal prosecutors have requested a jail term of up to two years for Naeem Tyab, a Vancouver man who pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a five-year bribery scheme. They say that Mr. Tyab and others arranged payouts totalling $2-million to diplomats from the African country of Chad in order to obtain oil rights. (All figures are in U.S. dollars.) Mr. Tyab realized $27.6-million in illegal gains selling shares during the scheme, prosecutors claim.

The request from prosecutors comes as part of a case in which they cited Mr. Tyab for a scheme involving Griffiths Energy International Inc., a then-private Calgary company that is now part of Glencore PLC. According to prosecutors, Chad's U.S. ambassador and another official solicited and accepted bribes from Mr. Tyab and, in return, agreed to use their positions to influence the awarding of oil rights. There was no trial for Mr. Tyab, as he pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail. He entered that plea on April 30, 2019, and has been free on bond since, with his release conditions allowing travel within the U.S.
