The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Feb. 21, edition that the Pathways Alliance is rebranding to the Oil Sands Alliance to better reflect its focus on promoting the oil sands industry. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that Kendall Dilling, president of the group, said that while most efforts have centred on the Pathways carbon-capture project, the organization has always had a broader focus. "From day one, we've been the full-service industry association for oil sands," Mr. Dilling said. Pathways works on various environmental issues, including air and water protection, biodiversity preservation, and land-use planning. While everything was previously under the Pathways banner, stakeholders are now confused as they primarily associate Pathways with the carbon-capture project central to the group's emissions-reduction plan. The carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative involves a 400-kilometre pipeline that will transport carbon from oil-sands facilities to an underground hub near Cold Lake, Alta., aiming to reduce emissions by 22 megatonnes annually. Now that the project has advanced "to a certain point of maturity," it needs to have its own separate identity, Mr. Dilling said.
