The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Jan. 23, edition that TD Cowen analyst Sean Steuart believes that the sentiment regarding forestry and packaging companies, especially those in wood products, has begun on a positive note in early 2026. The Globe's David Leeder writes in the Eye On Equities column that Mr. Steuart says investors are reacting to encouraging data on U.S. home sales, rising prices for lumber and oriented strand board (OSB), as well as potential support from U.S. housing policies. Mr. Steuart says in a note: "We believe that inevitable wood product supply closures will precede an eventual demand recovery. Relative balance-sheet strength matters. ... Our new 2027 commodity price estimates are 2 to 4 per cent higher than 2026 forecasts for key grades. Cumulative expected year-over-year EBITDA growth for our coverage set: 32 per cent in 2026 (from a low base) and 28 per cent in 2027." Mr. Steuart continues to rate Western Forest Products "hold." Mr. Steuart boosted his share target by a loonie to $14. Analysts on average target the shares at $13. The Globe reported on April 21 and Oct. 17 that Mr. Steuart had reaffirmed his "hold" recommendation. The shares could then be had for $11.10 and $12.10.
