Globe says Molson sees aluminum can prices surge

2026-09-21 07:33 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Sept. 21, edition that North American aluminum can prices have surged about 50 per cent due to U.S. tariffs, opening an opportunity for Chinese manufacturers. The Globe's Nathan VanderKlippe writes that tariffs have increased costs for alcohol producers, often being their most expensive item. Canada has relied on United States companies for can production since the late 1800s. B.C.-based Canvas Craft's Vadim Bajgoric says it wasn't like this two years ago, when all of the cans that came through his can-printing line were made in North America. Then came the tariffs and soaring prices. Now, "China has a tremendous edge," says Mr. Bajgoric. Factories outside Shanghai are selling cans at a one-third discount to those in the U.S. Chinese prices are now roughly on par with what American-made products cost prior to President Donald Trump's second-term inauguration and the raft of tariffs he imposed. The difference can reach eight cents a can, a relative fortune for Canada's hundreds of brewers, who together fill 3.7 billion cans a year. Mr. Trump has promoted tariffs as a way to bolster U.S. manufacturing. Instead, they have driven customers to buy Chinese-made goods.
