Globe says Corby, rivals rethink export plans

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, Aug. 26, edition that alcohol remains a significant issue in the Canada-United States trade war. The Globe's Mera Raman and Sophia Bertuzzi write that most provinces continue to keep American alcohol off their shelves since March, 2025, retaliating against the Trump administration tariffs. Canadian producers now face a 50-per-cent U.S. duty that became effective after trade negotiations collapsed. With access to the U.S. market becoming costlier and less predictable, dismantling Canada's interprovincial trade barriers is now more urgent. In 2024-2025, Canada exported $1.4-billion worth of alcoholic beverages to the U.S., up 4.1 per cent year over year, accounting for about 90 per cent of the country's alcohol exports. The Canadian spirits sector contributes about $5.8-billion to Canada's GDP and supports more than 48,800 fulltime equivalent jobs across the country. For some producers, the trade war has halted plans for expansion south of the border. Before it broke out last winter, Pelham Family Estate Winery said it was looking to "aggressively build the business around the border states," but the trade uncertainty caused it to back off.
