The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Aug. 11, edition that Quebec Premier Christine Frechette says the province is open to reintroducing American alcohol products, but it hinges on progress in trade talks. Postmedia's Philip Authier writes that Mr. Frechette said Monday: "I am ready to consider the return under the condition that Quebec makes gains in trade talks. For example, the lowering of trade barriers for sectors which are important for Quebec such as forestry, aluminum, the manufacturing sector. All these sectors are suffering the effects of Donald Trump's administration's approach in significant and damaging way. ... From the moment there are gains, well then I would be open to return the alcohol to the shelves of the Societe des alcools du Quebec." She said that Quebec's supply management for milk and dairy, along with its language and culture, are non-negotiable. The Quebec government imposed the ban in March, 2025, in response to the Trump administration's tariffs on Canadian and Quebec goods. There were reports Friday that the federal government is ready to meet some trade demands including the end of the ban on alcohol sales if the U.S. drops some tariffs.
