The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that the last time Anthony Scaramucci, also known as "the Mooch," saw Prime Minister Mark Carney in person, was at a wine tasting he hosted in Davos. The Globe's Marieke Walsh writes that the two have known each other for three decades, beginning when they both worked at investment bank Goldman Sachs in the 1990s. The connection leaves Mr. Scaramucci with a rare vantage point on the strained state of affairs between Canada and the United States. Mr. Scaramucci believes Canada will remain in Mr. Trump's tariff cycle but doesn't expect it to face the worst economic consequences promised by the President. "Trump is getting a lot of pressure from inside the United States, and so I think this will be a good outcome, and I think it'll probably improve Carney's favourability." Mr. Scaramucci notes that Canadians may not see the pressure the Trump administration faces from United States corporate leaders lobbying for tariff relief. He argues that when push comes to shove, Mr. Trump won't want to risk the lucrative relationships he's built with CEOs who rely on the integrated North American economy. He says Mr. Carney knows the auto executives are applying immense pressure.
