The National Post reports in its Saturday, July 25, edition that United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced on Thursday that President Donald Trump is imposing new tariffs on Canada and 59 other countries. The Post's Tracy Moran writes that this follows the recent invocation of Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which introduced anti-discrimination tariffs on about 5 per cent of Canadian imports to the U.S. at a rate of 50 per cent. Mr. Greer said the White House is imposing the new tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 against 60 countries following a forced labour investigation, which launched in March. The USTR probe involved two public hearings and over 2,100 comments, finding that Canada and Mexico, along with China and others, did not adequately screen goods for child or forced labour. Trade watchers, however, say the additional tariffs have little to do with forced labour. Advancing American Freedom's Andrew Hale said: "The Trump administration has shown little actual concern so far for human rights. The Trump administration is using forced labour as an excuse to impose tariffs just as they declared emergencies under IEEPA to impose tariffs."
