The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday edition that U.S. President Donald Trump is escalating the trade war with Canada by imposing 50-per-cent tariffs on various goods in retaliation for Canadian curbs on U.S. imports of autos, alcohol and dairy. A triple bylined item led by Adrian Morrow says Mr. Trump signed three proclamations using a rarely invoked section of the Tariff Act to implement these levies. The President's new levies will tariff Canadian alcohol and dairy, along with hundreds of other goods like hockey sticks, cement, electronics and Christmas ornaments. Tariffs will take effect on Aug. 19, without exemptions for goods under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, increasing economic strain on a close ally since Mr. Trump's return to office last year. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer's office said the tariffs would apply to nearly $20-billion (U.S.) worth of Canadian goods, 5 per cent of the country's exports to the U.S. The new tariffs will not apply to oil, gas, potash, fish or critical minerals, even though oil and gas is the main source of the U.S.'s trade deficit with Canada, which Mr. Trump has said he wants to eliminate. Mr. Trump last year imposed hefty tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos.
