The National Post reports in its Tuesday edition that on Thursday Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a new "strategic partnership" aimed at enhancing trade and collaboration with China. The Post's Christopher Nardi writes that Mr. Carney also encouraged Chinese electric vehicle investments in Canada. Mr. Carney called China the greatest threat to Canada's national security in April. He may be regretting that comment today. Canada needs to diversify its trading partners and China is a prime candidate because it is a more predictable partner than the United States. Likely also on the Liberals' mind is President Donald Trump's National Security Strategy which aims to draw away Canadian auto manufacturing. China, with its lead in EV manufacturing and technology, is a top candidate for Canada to woo. The technology in the vehicles raises concerns about potential spying by China and threats to foreign national security. The Carney government is taking precautions in its dealings with China, seen by Canada's security agencies as the most sophisticated threat to the country. The PM said Canada discussed its expectations and "red lines" with the Chinese government with respect to foreign interference and other public safety issues.
