The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Dec. 9, edition that the triangle of sadness in personal finance consists of houses, groceries and vehicles, and there is no major relief expected in 2026. The Globe's Rob Carrick writes that after five years of inflation, you have likely cut grocery spending as much as possible. Selling your home to reduce costs is not a viable option either, as it brings its own challenges. Canadians are facing the "Great Canadian Money Suck" as the average new vehicle price reached nearly $45,000, with monthly loan payments around $850, according to J.D. Power. While many have accepted this financial burden, signs indicate that this may be shifting. Hoyes Michalos & Associates' Scott Terrio, reflecting on his 16 years as a bankruptcy trustee, often told clients that high vehicle payments were damaging their cash flow. He said: "The difference now is that I have spoken to at least five or six people who have actively said to me, before I suggested it, that they'd like to give their car back. And that's never happened." Equifax reports a 10.8-per-cent increase in borrowers missing three or more auto loan payments, totalling 1.9 per cent of borrowers in the third quarter.
