The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Dec. 5, edition that the United States should scrap all national-security-based tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico -- including on aluminum, steel, cars and lumber -- and move quickly to renew the three-country agreement that upholds North American free trade, the largest U.S. business group told President Donald Trump's administration on Thursday. The Globe's Nathan VanderKlippe writes that if the administration disrupts continental trade, U.S. consumers may face challenges in obtaining essential goods, warned an alliance of major foreign corporations. Powerful figures in the global economy issued warnings during a three-day hearing by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, part of the preparations for the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement starting July 1, 2026. The Trump administration has cast doubt on its future. Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, raised the possibility in comments to a Politico podcast that will be released Friday, saying "the President's view is he only wants deals that are a good deal. The reason why we built a review period into USMCA was in case we needed to revise it, review it or exit it."
