The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Martin Eberhard was the true inventor of the Tesla, but in a lawsuit, Elon Musk won the right to call himself a founder. The Globe's Johanna Schneller writes that there are many such examples in director Alex Gibney's "Musk." Mr. Gibney is fascinated by people who invent and then believe their own stories: He has made documentaries about Lance Armstrong, Steve Jobs, WikiLeaks and Scientology -- and Musk is a whopper, nearly four hours long. Settle in, it's worth it. Four years in the making, it is top-notch journalism. New Yorker writers are producers, and Mr. Gibney interviewed whoever agreed. Mr. Musk himself declined, calling the project a "hit piece," which of course means a story you don't like, regardless of whether it's factually accurate. Several potential subjects said they'd talk if Mr. Musk okayed it; Mr. Gibney never heard from them again. Mr. Musk's father, Errol, appears, and he is abjectly terrifying. Especially impressive is the number of women who step up, including mothers of seven of Mr. Musk's 14-possibly-plus children. As Mr. Gibney details in chilling numbers, a lot of fraud, mayhem and death are perpetrated behind that wizard's curtain.
