The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that a peer review of fossil fuel subsidies between Canada and Argentina -- already years behind schedule -- stalled after Argentina ceased communication following its 2023 election and change in government. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post says the review was first launched in 2018 as part of a G20 commitment to eliminate all "inefficient" fossil fuel sector subsidies. While it was only supposed to take a couple of years to complete, it was clear as early as 2019 that it would be behind schedule and it now seems to have fallen off the rails entirely. Canada says Argentina ceased communication and participation in the process after Argentines voted into office President Javier Milei -- a right-wing populist who has referred to climate change as a "socialist lie." Argentina's negotiators left the annual UN climate talks in 2024. Environmental groups say Canada still spends billions of dollars to support oil and gas companies. A report by Environmental Defence says Canada spent close to $30-billion in 2024 to support the sector. That includes $1-billion for Strathcona's carbon capture plans, and $10-million for clean fuel projects, including fossil fuel hydrogen.
