The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, May 5, edition that the foreign industrialist controlling Canada's largest pulp-and-paper company, Jackson Widjaja, expressed his strong belief in the country and is open to addressing any concerns about his ownership in Parliament. The Globe's Nicolas Van Praet writes that Mr. Widjaja founded Paper Excellence Group in Canada in 2006. He aims to invest further and become North America's leading pulp-and-paper producer. "Canada is really my first pocket of gold," he stated. Despite facing scrutiny for rapidly consolidating Canada's forest-products sector by acquiring Catalyst Paper in 2019, Domtar in 2021 and Resolute Forest Products in 2023, he insists he will contribute positively to Canada. Mr. Widjaja has not engaged in public events in Canada. His decision to speak to The Globe indicates he recognizes the drawbacks of his withdrawn approach. Much is at stake. Mr. Widjaja's family businesses have faced intense criticism for their forestry practices and human-rights abuses in Indonesia, particularly from environmentalists who say they caused widespread devastation to rain forests. Mr. Widjaja says he will not change how he operates Domtar.
