The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Rogers posted a jump in free cash flow in its third quarter but posted flat revenue and lower new subscription numbers, as it works toward a minority sale of its sports holdings. The Globe's Irene Galea writes that the company reported $1.3-billion in free cash flow, up 65 per cent from last year. The free cash flow followed 46 per cent lower capital expenditures in the quarter. Earlier this year, the company said it planned to cut capital spending for the year by 30 per cent over all, in part by selling or deferring some infrastructure projects. The higher free cash flow was also the result of cable, wireless and real estate sales totalling $274-million in the quarter. Executives said the lower capital expenditure reflects the company's long-term strategy to grow free cash flow in order to improve its debt leverage ratio and strengthen its balance sheet. The company ended the quarter with $41.8-billion in long-term debt. Revenue was up 1 per cent, with a 9-per-cent bump in its sports and media division, boosted by strong Blue Jays performance and the earlier start of the NHL regular season. Adjusted net income of $701-million was down 3 per cent from last year.
