The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Dec. 6, edition that asbestos cleanup, tight work windows and other TTC delays have slowed the rollout of 5G cellular service in Toronto's subway system, and TTC staff now say they do not expect Rogers Communications to meet a federally imposed deadline that looms at the end of this month. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that a report for the Toronto Transit Commission board meeting next Wednesday indicates that Rogers Communications' 5G rollout may miss its targets. The document, however, cites issues related to the transit system itself, rather than Rogers's efforts. Service has started in many parts of the subway, including the busiest downtown section, but the 2-1/2-year project is ongoing, with progress lagging in some tunnel areas. In 2023, Ottawa mandated that Rogers and other carriers provide voice, text and data services in 80 per cent of subway tunnels by December, 2025, with full coverage required by December, 2026. The updated TTC report projects that 70 per cent of tunnels will be completed by year-end and 88 per cent by the end of 2026, with full project completion expected by the second quarter of 2027.
