The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that after a sales slowdown at Tim Hortons in the spring, the fast-food chain's new beverage launches are drawing younger customers to its stores. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky writes that Restaurant Brands International said Thursday comparable sales at Tims grew by 1.8 per cent in Canada in the third quarter -- an improvement from a flat performance in the previous quarter. Tim Hortons has been working on improving cleanliness and the speed of service in the restaurants, Josh Kobza, Restaurant Brands chief executive officer, said on a call to discuss the quarterly results. The chain has also benefited from the launch of new cold beverages, including matcha and a collaboration with Monster Energy drinks, both of which are attracting a new generation of visitors outside of the chain's usual demographic. Those items are also selling briskly during afternoons and on weekends, traditionally slower periods for the stores. Fast-food chains are working hard to draw in inflation-weary customers, who have been cutting back on restaurant spending. In the United States, continued progress on refreshing the Burger King brand yielded strong results in the quarter ended Sept. 30.
