The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that Postmedia announced Friday it is "pausing" its direct advertising on Meta-owned platforms, joining several other groups, including the CBC and federal and Quebec governments, that are boycotting Facebook and Instagram over Meta's decision to block Canadian news. The unbylined item says that last week, federal Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez said his government would stop making ad purchases on Facebook and Instagram as long as Meta was blocking Canadian news from its platforms in response to the Online News Act. Quebec did the same shortly afterward, with Premier François Legault saying, "No company is above the law." The Online News Act passed in June and takes effect later this year. It will obligate tech companies to reach commercial deals with news publishers to share revenue for news stories that appear on their platforms, while those companies that do not link to Canadian news stories are exempt. Meta has begun blocking Canadian news from its platforms to avoid being subject to the legislation. Google has said it will also block news before the law takes effect, but it has not yet begun to do so. Postmedia owns more than 130 brands in the news sector.
