The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Nov. 6, edition that Wednesday's stock market rally turned into a severe rout Thursday, led by some of the world's largest technology companies. The Globe's David Berman writes that the S&P 500 fell nearly 4.4 per cent, marking its worst one-day decline since April, 2025. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 5.5 per cent. The sell-off sent the tech-heavy benchmark into correction territory. From a high on Oct. 6, the Nasdaq is now down 11.9 per cent. Many names that are closely associated with artificial intelligence suffered some of the biggest hits. Nvidia fell 9.4 per cent, Meta fell 4.2 per cent and Space Exploration Technologies fell 9.2 per cent. The sell-off marked a dramatic reversal from Wednesday's gains. Investors may be focusing on the downside: a fresh appraisal of how a Democrat-controlled Congress could affect the pace of the artificial intelligence build-out, given concerns about electricity and water consumption in datacentres. Yorkville Ives & Co. analyst Dan Ives says, "There are white-knuckle fears of what this blue wave" -- the name given to the sweeping Democratic victory in this week's midterm elections -- "will do to the AI trade."
